MAHARASHTRIAN IMPLOSION

SUN TZU

In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy’s country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good. So, too, it is better to recapture an army entire than to destroy it, to capture a regiment, a detachment or a company entire than to destroy them.

Sun Tzu – Art of War

In recent times if one had to call out one of the better student and follower of the Chinese Philosopher & Military Strategist – Sun Tzu then I have no doubt it has to be Shri Eknath Shinde.

The suddenness of the move, without an iota of leak in the media is something that still baffles most of us. I mean to only hear about this after more than thirty legislatures reached Surat, is mind boggling. On the one hand it shows their level of disenchantment with the state leadership and on the other hand the play of ‘A Third Party’ in bankrolling such a dissent. Chaperoning the disgruntled / managed legislators from one BJP ruled state to another.

UDHAV THACKERAY / EKNATH SHINDE

However much the leader of the break-away section of the Shiv Sena espouse the cause of Hindutva for this implosion, I believe it was made possible by the application of the right amount of lubrication to make this friction bearable & possible.

However if one has to look back, this isn’t a one off case. There have been previous examples too where a political party has been broken away from its founding members. Two major such events have been:

  1. National Conference:
FAROOQ ABDULLAH / GHULAM MOHAMMAD SHAH

Sheikh Abdullah founded this party in the state of Jammu Kashmir. His son Farooq Abdullah succeeded him as the Chief Minister of the state after his death in 1982 and further went on to win the 1983 Assembly Elections with comfortable majority. A majority that was short lived as in 1984 his brother-in-law Ghulam Mohammad Shah  split the party to become the Chief Minister. As of today the party very much remains firmly in control of the Abdullah’s and a major political force in the state and the country. While Ghulam Mohammad Shah after his short tenure remains in the margins of Jammu Kashmir politics

  • Telgu Desham Party:
CHANRA BABU NAIDU / NT RAMA RAO

The Telugu Desham Party was founded by actor turned politician N. T. Rama Rao in 1982 in the erstwhile unified state of Andhra Pradesh. He was thrice elected as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. The last election he fought was in 1994 wining 269 seats in the 294 seat Assembly. This huge majority and his tenure were cut short by his Son-In-Law Chandra Babu Naidu led revolt in the party. Chandra Babu Naidu replaced NTR to become the CM in 1995 till 2004 and once again from 2014-2019. NTR died in 1986. The reigns of the party firmly remains in the hands of Chandra Babu Naidu

The question is whether the revolt by Shri Eknath Shinde will be a short lived like that one of Ghulam Mohammad Shah or whether he will be able to hold on to his ground like Chandra Babu Naidu.

I have a feeling the answer to this question can only be answered by the third party involved in this whole implosion.

Jyotiraditya Scindia

Dear Maharaj,

I am shocked and disheartened by your exit from my party. A party that you joined on 18.12.2001, after the demise of your father Late Madhvrao ji Scindia and pledged to uphold the “secular, liberal and social justice values”.

We Congress workers had always looked up to you for your forthrightness, energy and sincerity that you offered. I had the privilege in meeting you once when you had come to campaign for Girija ji Vyas during the 2018 Rajasthan Assembly Elections.

I was hoping against hope that all the drama of the past 2-3 days was about creating pressure on the Congress Central Leadership to pay heed to your demands. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that you would leave Congress to join some other party.

You were a member of my party for 19 years now, out of which you were MP for 18 years, a Central Minister and always had a say in the functioning of the party.

I refuse to believe that the top leadership didn’t grant you an appointment nor did they hear you out. I agree my party has suffered debacles one after another in the recent past but this is the time you were needed the most but यह हो न सका!!

Ever since your exit people have been telling me to explore other options but how can I leave the party that has given me and my family so much and similarly couldn’t you have been a little more patient.

But like they say politics is the art of possibilities, you have chosen your new path and we congress workers will walk our own long arduous path as long as it takes to uphold the “secular, liberal and social justice values”.

All the best for your future and I wouldn’t get into mud-slinging and just end with the following couplet :

Regards,

Deepak Sukhadia

ARTICLE 15

(1) The State shall not discriminate against any citizen on grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth or any of them.

(2) No citizen shall, on grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth or any of them, be subject to any disability, liability, restriction or condition with regard to—

     (a) access to shops, public restaurants, hotels and places of public entertainment; or

     (b) the use of wells, tanks, bathing ghats, roads and places of public resort maintained wholly or partly out of State funds or dedicated to the use of the general public.

Article 15 is the second in the list of the Fundamental Rights that the Indian Constitution guarantees to its Citizens.

This movie as the name suggests is based on this very Right. Ayushman Khurana plays this young IPS officer who after graduating from St. Stephens and studying abroad returns to join the Indian Police Services to fulfil his father’s wishes and gets posted to this back and beyond of Uttar Pradesh for using the term ‘Cool Sir!!’ with Shastriji – The Home Secretary.

As he takes charge of his office the area get embroiled in the missing and eventually deaths of two teenage Dalit Girls and the search for the third one. There is the caste equation in play and the need to maintain a given Social Order for everyone to live in harmony. His girlfriend who is an activist based in Delhi who acts as his emotional – guiding anchor and shows him the way.

B.R. Ambedkar exhorted Dalits to flee the countryside and move to the cities to escape the shackles of caste. “The love of the intellectual Indian for the village community is of course infinite, if not pathetic,” wrote Ambedkar. “What is a village but a sink of localism, a den of ignorance, narrow-mindedness and communalism?” This is what the setting in the film epitomizes.

This movie has three main stand out heros, namely :

  1. Ayushman Khurana – The last movie I saw of his was Andhadhun and in that review I had written that he is turning into 21st Century’s Amol Palekar considering the characters he was playing, how wrong I was !! This is a film he owns the role of the anglicised Police Officer. The depth, the gravitas and the dilemma is such enacted perfectly.
  2. Anubhav Sinha – It took him nearly 17 years to find his calling in the kind of movies he wanted to make. From touching the Hindu – Muslim divide in Mulk and now handling the Caste Equations in this ones. He doesn’t sugar coat the harsh reality of today’s India. There is no holding back and and he spares no one and calls out the names as they stand.
  3. Dialogues – What crackling dialogue !! Hitting out on the political parties, the caste  system and the system, to quote a few:
  • “Main Or Tum Inhai Dekhai He Nahe Dete… Hum Kabhi Harijan Hojate Hai, Kabhi Bahujan Ho Jate Hain Bus Jan Nahe Ban Pa Rahain Hai… Ke Jan Gan Mein Hamari Bhe Ginte Ho Jai”
  • “Jo hum dete hain vahi aukaat hai sir”

jpr78646467573897193-largeWhat we see in this movie is not that happens something in some far away land, not too far from the cities we live in a Dalit Gdalitroom can’t ride on a Horse, no one wants to eat from a Dalit’s hands in schools that are supposed to remove this very idea of untouchability.

How long before the millennial old notions of social order is finally consigned to flames?

How long before we start accepting the idea of everyone being equal before even talking against reservations??

Go watch this movie for it deserves not only to be seen and but also to be imbibed.

Political Worker

One lazy Sunday afternoon when moving an eyelid is also a herculean task, my father informs me of an impending visit by a hotshot astrologer / politician claiming to be close to the mighty and powerful from a northern state. Grudgingly I muster all my energy and move away from my weekend of Netflix Binge.

This gentleman arrives with his entourage with all the necessary peripherals i.e. wearing Starched Linen (bcoz linen is the new Khaadi) Kurta-Pyjama, carrying 2 Mobile Phones and couple of hanger-ons !! A few minutes in the conversation I realised his clout was definitely overstated and he was what is called in the corporate jargon – A midlevel employee, someone who draws power from the fact that the CEO knows his name and this very achievement is used to keep the subordinates in their place i.e. tiny cubicles!!

Having had a brief experience as a karyakarta of my party, I can sometimes easily find out the nature of a person in terms of their politics. I have realised the political workers can be somewhat be broadly classifies in set of categories across the party lines. Each has their own unique characteristics. To name a few:

  • The Believers – The Believers are the true upholders of the party ideology. They implicitly believedownload in the principles of the party and its leaders. They are never hankering for party posts or draw personal advantage from the above beliefs. For them being in power or not is immaterial as long as the party is true to its cause. This is a category any party should be proud to have but sadly they are the most neglected ones only remembered during the elections.

  • The Dissidents – The whole existence of Dissidents is derived from the fact they oppose a powerful download (1)individual from their own party with tooth and nail. They are usually in minority in their party but that’s what gives them visibility, acceptance and media space. They may not have any worthwhile accomplishments of their own but their own stature is only fed on the criticism of the other.

  • The Followers – The followers is what every Leader/Neta wants to acquire. Party ideology be downloaddamned!! They have complete faith, trust and confidence in their leader whichever side he chooses to be in. They are similar to the believers in a sense that like them they are always standing with their leaders. There is however a downside of having them, they sometimes cloud the reason of their leader and also takes them away from the reality.

  • The Fence Sitters – This category belongs to individuals who want to be close to power. They have no ideology and no loyalties. download (2)They can suck-up to whoever is calling the shots. Considering the fleeting nature of politics they can switch loyalties in a blink of an eye with no remorse or guilt. They are perfect in playing the subservient role and can give a true follower a run for his money and make the Neta even question The Followers. They are the most dangerous one cause you don’t know when they switch to the other side and show their true colours.

  • The Professional – Politics now days for some are no more about service and this category symbolises this download (1)perfectly. For them politics is another profession they have chosen to be to earn their livelihood. Their politics is about the advancement of their business and are usually in an industry that is highly dependent of government liaison or interference. They sometimes have to suffer from being close to a political party but the profits earned during the good times help them glide over these hiccups.

To get back to the beginning, over a cup of चाय (u can say चाय-पे-चर्चा) we discussed politics, wrote off some people and then he left our place with big promises of putting a positive word for me to the higher ups. I just hope I don’t have to use his influence but like Mr. Bond said ‘Never say Never Again’, I am thinking of soon forwarding him Good Morning message !!

A JOURNEY TO REMEMBER

unnamed (2)

Scene Two – FB Messenger 00:15 AM

WW 2– How are you Sir?
Me – Doing Good !!
WW 2 – (Starts giving me Political Gyaan)
Me – Good Nite.

WW- Well Wisher???

This is the oft repeated midnight messages that I receive from some of my FB friends who think that just suppose I update my status late at night I am game to receive their ज्ञान.

Thidownload (1)s first WW is busy showing off the success (questionable) that he has achieved that has taken him from a small town of Rajasthan to the lobbies of Delhi Five Star Hotels and I guess that qualifies him to question my work!! I have somehow always found this lobbying and Liaison work little dubious and questionable but again to each his own. The conversation left me wondering what kind of work of mine would give him मज़ा !!

The Second WW happens to be a small time reporter of an equally small news agency with an ego that doesn’t commensurate with the quality and size of his work, was immediately unfriended after wishing him a Good Night !

To set the record straight and I repeat, no one can question my work or the lack of it!!
